My 10 year old daughter really would like to play this game. She has saved up money and has enough to purchase the game now. However some of the content shown in the advertisements does not seem appropriate for her age. Are there any configuration settings I could apply to filter out any undesired content?

There are not things you can lock out. Three things you could do is try the game yourself to test it, watch Let's Play videos on Youtube, or simply not buy it for her. It's rated T (for teen). If you feel it's inappropriate, don't buy it.
Dissatisfied with Sims 4 and hoping for a better Sims 5
  • Hmm, there aren't any settings you can configure except maybe to turn aging off if you think death isn't an appropriate thing. As for the sexual content, there's nothing to prevent your daughter from making Sims 'woohoo'.

  • It should also be noted that you see absolutely nothing in regards to woohoo. If the couple is having a 'really fun' time of it, you may get fireworks. The bed bounces a bit, but there is nothing obscene. If you're in doubt, I would suggest you check it out before you give her the go-ahead.

  • Hello.
There are no settings that can be configured to filter out content. Perhaps have a read of some of the guides on Carl's Sims 4 site and see if you feel that the game is suitable for your daughter.

Simmers need to have an account with Origin to play the game. With her age, you can set up a child's account for her , and a child's account is prevented from accessing the community section of the Gallery.
    This link explains about it.

Is sims 4 really rated for teens in america? In germany you can play it, if you are over 6 years old. It is really kids friendly.

Americans can be a bit...puritanical at times, especially in regards to sex. So it gets rated for teens over here. I also believe it's very kid friendly. My 11 year old plays it and I personally don't feel there's anything in it that would be inappropriate for her. However, the Sims can do things like have affairs, hack (hacking your grades is an option, as well) and there is a criminal career and a career for being an evil spy. So, if any of those things are a concern for you, you might want to check it out, as suggested, before allowing her to get it.

  • FWIW, I let my daughter play sims 2 when she was 10 and she is now all grown up and it doesn't seem to have damaged her

Every child is different, every parent is also different. What may be appropriate for one child may not be appropriate for the next.
I'd suggest reading and watching reviews, if you're okay there, play it by yourself (without your child), if you're still okay, I'd suggest taking it to where you're supervising your daughter (if you find it necessarily) and when you think it's alright, then allow her to play it on her own.
I don't think there's anything wrong with exercising caution and educating yourself with the games your child is playing.
That said when I was a child I was exposed to horror movies, and with that there was... exactly all the things you'd expect of typical slasher films (80s/90s). But I loved them, so much so I thought everyone died by getting murdered for too many years (I started watching horror movies in shows in elementary school) And the games I played, like mortal combat... smh now. Lol. I turned out growing up to be a decent and empathetic/sympathetic adult, but looking back I probably shouldn't have been watching all of things I seen, and someone should have at least been telling me about what I was seeing.
But that said, I wasn't the type of child to see what I seen in movies and games and go out trying to do that irl, but there are some kids who take media too be reality. So yeah, I mean it all depends, that's my point lol.
Now obviously the sims isn't a violent game, but if you think you're child might not be mature enough to handle the woohoo, try for baby, the making out, and the cartoony fights, then I'm sure you know best as the parent. But I do think it's fairly tame as aside from the making out, you don't actually see anything. And you certainly don't see anything I'd think was graphic.
Though I feel like the Get Together did step up the... romance levels (a lot more suggestive imo), so before you buy eps and things, I'd suggest looking into them as well.

*There's nothing wrong with loving the Sims 4, there's also nothing wrong with seeking improvements.

  • Like most people have said here, I also think the way the game handless all the grown up stuff, like 'woohoo' and 'juice' is appropriate to a 10 year old. I mean, a kid that age probably knows something about that stuff already. And the way woohoo for example is shown in the game... Well, like people have already said, it doesn't really show anything. Just gives the idea the two (grown up) sims are having fun together.
Actually, a colleague of mine just told me she bought the game to her 10 year old son. Then, one day, they were coming home from somewhere and the boy was excited to get to playing, once back home, and said:'When we get home, I'm going to make a baby!' My friend wasn't shocked, she mostly found it funny, because, hey, it's just a game, not real life

  • Well the Sims 2 was way more sexual back in the day and that got 7+ back in the day. The Sims 4 is nowhere as bad and it got a 12+ in the UK. (As an example).
So tbh, it's more that ratings are getting more sensitive rather than it being really adult. In my head, I was playing the Sims 2 at age 8, and I'm fine. So I think the Sims 4 should be fine
  • Also kids know that couples 'kiss' and do stuff under the covers they just don't know what. And the Sims doesn't go into any further detail.
  • Theres no way to disable the Content for kid safety, you as a parent should sit with her and explain things in a way that she understands about the game

  • this is an old post but if it helps, i played sims at around her age. i kinda had the vague idea of what 'woohooing' was, my mom told me that if i click the woohoo action i cant play anymore. legit worked up until 8th grade lol
  • I've been playing The Sims since I was 10 years old... lol (I'm 22 now). It's fine. Relax and just let her play. There's nothing in this game (especially Sims 4, which is the most quirky game in the series) that's even remotely inappropriate for kids to see/hear.

  • I had a few concerns when buying for my daughter early on (mind you, she's 20 now and it was clearly not Sims 4 back then but after playing it myself for so long, I can say the actual game interactions aren't too risky or naughty. I Would, however, watch carefully if you allow her to have custom content as some of that can be down right x-rated.
Ask for help! Even if you only get comfort and commiseration, that's better than always wondering if anyone cares.
